Tyler Perry Makes It To The Oscars - Finally!

Today we got word that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that writer, director, and producer Tyler Perry will make his debut on the 82nd Academy Awards as a presenter.

As we all know, Perry is probably best known for his big screen role as the sharp tongued Madea. Tyler Perry has become an industry unto himself with such profitable hits as Madea's Family Reunion, Why Did I Get Married? and Meet the Browns. This past year Perry, who writes, stars and usually directs
his own films, appeared in another filmmakers work for the first time when he played an Admiral in J.J. Abrams' summer blockbuster Star Trek.

The filmmaker made a bold step coming on board Lionsgate's Precious: Based on a novel 'Push' by Sapphire as an executive producer alongside Oprah Winfrey after its debut at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival. While Perry isn't one of the three credited producers in Precious nomination for Best Picture, he and Winfrey deserve a tremendous amount of credit in helping the film reach a wider audience. It's unclear if Winfrey, a former nominee for her role in Steven Spielberg's The Color Purple, plans to attend the big show herself, but we expect that she may make an appearance in support of the film.

Oh, did we fail to mention that Perry’s next film Why Did I Get Married Too? opens nationwide on April 2.

Chris Tucker's Brother Shoots Home Intruder!

After enjoying the Mariah Carey concern in Los Angeles last night, Chris Tucker woke up to some serious family issues this morning.

According to MyFox Atlanta, in Decatur, Georgia Dexter Tucker, the brother of Chris Tucker, shot an intruder into his home early this morning.

DeKalb County police said 40-year-old Tucker was justified in shooting a 17-year-old who broke into his home.

Tucker said he had run the scenario of an intruder in his mind many times before, but he never thought it would actually happen.

Tucker said he was asleep when he heard knocking at the front door. The Decatur man said he peered through the shades but didn't answer the door.

"Then he started beating on the door," Tucker recalled.

Tucker said he saw a young man run to the back door and that's when he grabbed his gun.

"I couldn't believe he was kicking in my door and it took him like four kicks to get in so by the time he got in I was ready for him," Tucker said.

Tucker said he shot the intruder three times, striking him once in the thigh. The homeowner said he then saw another young man running away.

Neighbor Vermail Harris said she saw someone running away and getting into a car down the road.

"He ended up hopping in a car so I gave [the police] a description of the vehicle he got in and they found him later.

Tucker said the teens left their car when they fled. Police later arrested a 17-year-old male and a 16-year-old girl in a stolen car not far away.

Police said they suspect the teens who were arrested might be responsible for other crimes in the area.

The three teens involved face burglary and other charges.

Police said Tucker rightfully defended his home.

As we originally hinted at a couple of weeks ago, it seems that Comedy Central has ordered a six-episode half-hour, urban and hip hop stand-up series from Russell Simmons and Stan Lathan, it was announced today by Elizabeth Porter, senior vice president, specials and talent, of Comedy Central. The multicultural series hosted by JB Smoove, ("Curb Your Enthusiasm") will shoot in Los Angeles on February 24 and 25 at the El Rey Theater and is set to premiere this summer.

"We've been trying to get into business with Russell and Stan for a while now and this new stand-up series is an exciting first venture for us to partner with them," said Porter. "As someone who was a huge fan of 'Def Comedy Jam,' working alongside these two incredible visionaries on this series has been nothing short of amazing. With JB Smoove as our front man and all the fresh faces that Russell and Stan have discovered for the show, we'll be giving our viewers something really awesome each week."

"'Def Comedy Jam' made a significant contribution to American pop culture by introducing so many superstars," said Simmons. "Now, with Comedy Central as our new partner, we're poised to present the next generation of star talent."

Together, they co-own The Simmons Lathan Media Group, a film and television production and acquisitions company that develops and distributes urban content across a variety of media platforms.

Richard Pryor Biopic Set To Finally Start Filming!

We just discovered that the much talked about Richard Pryor biopic is set to start filming this fall. As we reported several months ago, the lead role of Pryor will be played by comedic actor Marlon Wayans.

As many of you probably know by now, comedian Mike Epps was originally cast in the title role while Pryor was still alive, but the role eventually went to Eddie Murphy when Director Bill Condon discovered that Murphy was interested in the part.

After creative difference between Murphy and the film’s producer’s, Murphy bowed out of the film and then cast Marlon Wayans in the title role after what is believed to be one of the hottest auditions Hollywood has seen in awhile. As a matter of fact, according to many published reports, Wayans did so well during that audition, that currently the talk in Hollywood is he will “make Richard Pryor proud of his performance.”

The film titled Richard Pryor: Is It Something I Said? will start shooting in the fall with a projected released date of early next spring. As of this writing, no other parts have been cast in this film.
