Will & Jada Pinkett-Smith Prepare To Be Sued & File Lawsuit Themselves!

We just discovered from our friends over at Deadline Hollywood Daily that superstar actors Will Smith and his wife Jada Pinkett-Smith have some rough waters ahead. We hear that Smith's and James Lassiter’s Overbrook Entertainment, and Jada Pinkett-Smith’s 100 Percent Woman Film Investments filed a complaint in California Superior Court this week. I'm told the filing is meant to head off a threatened lawsuit by an investor in Human Contract, a film Pinkett-Smith wrote and directed which went straight to video and apparently lost money. Lawyers filed the complaint for declaratory relief against David Grasso, described in the filing as a Philadelphia real estate mogul who invested in Pinkett-Smith’s film through his Tycoon Entertainment banner. I'm told the complaint was a proactive legal move by Pinkett-Smith and Overbrook after Grasso sent a letter threatening to sue for fraud unless he got his money back. Overbrook is involved because the company manages Pinkett-Smith.

The complaint argues that Grasso is a seasoned real estate investor who had ICM as his counsel and should have understood the speculative nature of investing in film. According to the complaint, Grasso claimed in his letter that he was told his investment was risk-free. Plaintiffs deny making such an assertion, and claim Grass acknowledged in writing that he understood the risks.

I couldn’t immediately reach Grasso. But Pinkett-Smith’s attorney Ken Hertz said in a statement, "Although we normally shun this type of controversy, we felt compelled to respond to the baseless threats and absurd allegations put forth by Mr. Grasso’s counsel. Mr. Grasso is a very experienced investor and he approached our clients — eager to invest in this film… We sincerely wish this film had reached a larger audience, and we share Mr. Grasso’s disappointment that it did not.”

Death At A Funeral Film Review!

Today we were able to see a private screening of the new film Death At A Funeral. In case you haven’t heard, the newest film stars comedians Chris Rock, Martin Lawrence, Tracy Morgan, and Kevin Hart.

The new film from Screen Gems is about a funeral ceremony turns into a debacle of exposed family secrets and misplaced bodies. The film also stars Danny Glover, Luke Wilson, Columbus Short, Regina Hall, James Marsden, and Loretta Devine and is set to be released by Screen Gems on April 16, 2010.

Anyway, this film is one of the funniest films we have seen in a long time, and is a must-see. We normally don’t write about films this far in advance, but we just had to. The performances of Rock and Lawrence were the usual (and by that we mean funny) but the true stars of the film are Morgan, Glover and James Marsden (who many of you will recognize from The X-Men franchise). This trio of actors stole the show and easily has the funniest film sequences in the entire film. Now we are not going to give anything away, but we will say this; when the film comes out opening weekend, make sure you get in live to purchase a ticket; it will be well worth it.

As Predicted, Mo'Nique Is Nominated For Oscar Gold!

As we predicted several months ago, and was confirmed by the Academy Awards, Mo’Nique was finally nominated for an Oscar. Mo'Nique got the nod for Best Supporting Actress for her performance as an abusive parent in the film titled Precious, which is a family drama based on the novel by Sapphire.

Also as we predicted, Mo'Nique appears to be the frontrunner to take home the Oscar gold for her performance and she has been joined by Penelope Cruz in Nine, Maggie Gyllenhaal in Crazy Heart, and both Vera Farmiga and Anna Kendrick in Up in the Air.

Mo'Nique created a character of ferocity and hate that lacked any discernable humanity, and her performance is one of the most stand out performances of the film.

We also stated that Mo’Nique wanted her performance in the film to speak for her, and finally we will be able to see if that happens.

At the beginning of the month we asked you to VOTE for your TOP 5 Comedians OF THE YEAR. The rules were rather simple; it was for ANY COMIC that you were able to see perform stand-up within the last year, whether it was on TV or in person.
We also asked that you would vote for FIVE comedians, not just ONE comedian. Now, many of you followed the rules and many of you did not. But we counted many of your votes anyway…

Well the TOP FIVE COMEDIANS of 2009 that YOU voted for were;

5- Corey Holcomb
4- Tony Rock
3- Earthquake
2- Mike Epps
1- Cedric The Entertainer

Then there is soooooo many folks who got votes that we just had to give them an honorable mention, and that list is;

5- Cece Mor
4 -Tony Roberts
3- TuRae Gordon
2- Jay Phillips
1- DeRay Davis

Now that the results are in and counted, we are sure that some of you may have problems with who is on the list. All we can say is that next year follow the rules and VOTE! The final decision is up to you!
